Honeymoon Abroad 1/2: London, England
Jenna Reed
So it occurred to me that I never shared anything about our honeymoon trip to Europe.
Then, while going through the photographs from our trip, I realized why… because we barely took any photos over more than a week of being over there! We really spent our time living in the moment and didn’t document or share a whole lot of it.
Looking back I’m excited to share the snippets I did grab a shot of, though.
We were staying at an Air BnB in the Shoreditch neighborhood; close to plenty of good coffee, hip bars, GLUTEN FREE fried chicken, and awesome (AWESOME) secondhand shops.
We spent a whole day wandering around in and out of those shops… high end, low end, Burberry, Levis. I would go back to that neighborhood again just for their secondhand shops.
Did I mention the gluten free fried chicken?! Bird has GLUTEN FREE fried chicken!!! It was so delicious… you can’t imagine my excitement. We went twice (was there a third trip??) in the four days we were there! There was a lot of awesome celiac-friendly food in London, but fried chicken might have been the most exciting discovery for me.
I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned Mikkeller on here before, but Kyle and I have a bit of a thing going to try and visit every Mikkeller bar in the world. There are many, and we’ve now visited in Reykjavik, Iceland; Los Angeles and San Francisco, California; and London, England!
Funniest part is, there’s one very close to where we actually live, right around the corner in Queens. To make it a smidge worse, it’s right around the corner from my favorite baseball team’s home stadium (go Mets!)… someday we’re going to have to remedy that situation.
Anyway, while visiting Mikkeller in London’s Shoreditch neighborhood, we found it was adorned with Rick Springfield lyrics… gotta love it! We chose to visit on Valentine’s Day, February 14th (we were married on February 9th). Valentine’s day is a pretty big deal for us, as it happens to be the day that we met. Both very single, me very much not looking to mingle. It’s no wonder why we didn’t get together for another two full months.
We did lots (and lots and lots and lots) of walking and exploring… amidst that walking, we found a couple of different little flea markets! One of which had this feline friend. I almost bought it, too; I was really missing my kitty cats at home.
Kyle (very kindly) pointed out that I would need to buy a second suitcase if I intended on bringing that beauty home. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t at all regretting leaving it behind, but he’s probably right.
Did I mention we happened to accidentally be in London for the first day of London Fashion Week? Let me tell you, our last day there was VERY stylish… we visited Selfridge’s for the first time! It was a definite highlight for me; the displays were all top-notch beautiful and, unrelated, there’s a stand in the food court with the best gluten free bread and pizzas I’ve ever had. I would go back just for that bread. I mean, I would go back for all of it, but the bread was SO good.
Finally, shortly before being picked up by our Uber taking us to the train station (en route to Belgium!), I saw this on the side of a phone booth.
I’ve posted this in the past, but it’s still so relevant - might actually be more relevant now than ever before?
Of course there was much more to London than what’s been glazed over on here… there were so many gardens, beautiful old bridges and government buildings. There was an entire night out with family and I promise that I didn’t exclusively live off of fried chicken while there. Next time I’m there I will most definitely document more thoroughly!
Part two is going to be our time in Belgium… we spent three days in Brugges and one night in Brussels.
